Meishan Iron's U-turnning Stacker Crane Solution, Nanjing
As the sub-company of Baoshan Iron which is the biggest Chinese steel & iron manufacturing company, Meishan Iron has entrusted Huaruide to build a turnkey warehouse in its production plant in Nanjing city. The solution was to construct a 15.6 m high stand-alone warehouse with capacity to store more than 11,300 pallets, near 2000 pallets are super-heavy load which is over 3 tons, and the rest pallets load are 1 ton. It is equipped with a u-turning storage system, and RGV for inbound and outbound movement, which was supported by Huaruide WMS warehouse management system responding for managing all the warehouse’s process.
The Necessary Situation for Meishan Iron to Install an ASRS
When Meishan Iron moved forward with expansion of its production centre, it was very clear that the warehouse should be automated. Different with other product, the finished goods of steel is usually very heavy, to full utilize the space and store as many pallets as it can, more layers are required. However, it was dangerous to use forklift to put away the super heavy pallet on high layers, and once the pallet fall down, it is very hard to ensure operator and goods’ safety. In addition, ASRS is able to achieve the maximum permissible height, giving that the space available for warehouse construction.
This automatic installation proposed by Huaruide was the 15.6m racking high stand-alone warehouse, located next to manufacturing facility whose function for Meishan Iron is to store space pare for production facility. It comprised five aisles, in which three straight double-deep stacker cane and one u-turning stacker crane move on their own rail, handling the four sizes of pallets stored in racks. Huaruide WMS assigns defined locations for certain pallets. Thanks for the optimal space utilization, the Meishan Iron warehouse has a storage capacity of 11, 300 pallets in 3600m2.

Super-heavy U-turning Stacker Crane in Meishan Iron
The u-turning stacker crane’s rail is like u-shape, it allows stacker crane travelling to another aisle with installed a turning mechanical travelling structure. The advantage for this type is one stacker crane can take charge of more pallets transfer. Normally, one stacker crane can do four depth movement (doubt deep on both sides), and u-turning stacker crane can transfer at least 8 depth in 2 aisle. Moreover, cooperated with Huaruide Ramping system, one u-turning stacker carne can take or load all pallets in the warehouse in theoretically without caring about its low throughout which is very similar to train ramping system.
In Meishan Iron, to load 3 ton pallets, the stacker crane structure was reinforced form steel material to motors, which cost more. Consider about the low frequency in and out of the spare parts of the total warehouse (10 pallets in/out per day), the u-turning stacker crane solution becomes very reasonable.
Huaruide WMS Application
Meisha Iron uses the Huaruide WMS to meet all the management needs related to the production lines.
This WMS controls all the entry processes, the location in the warehouse, stocks, location rules, retrieval, the pallets that have to go to picking stations, the picking itself, returns to the warehouse, etc, and feed back to SAP ERP of customers in a permanent, or bidirectional manner via interface.
